Duties and Responsibilities of the VMware Administrator


VMware administrators create, implement and manage network and server infrastructures based on VMware products such as vSphere, vRealize or vSAN. At the start of a project, they collaborate with other specialists and engineers to create a suitable system project for customers, then install and configure software and hardware components at customer sites. Despite these resource-intensive activities, VMware administrators spend much of their time on maintenance and troubleshooting to ensure peak performance. While they mostly work on the computer with occasional trips to customer sites, they can stay on duty overnight or on weekends to provide ongoing system support.

Duties and Responsibilities of the VMware Administrator

Implement the infrastructure

VMware administrators create and install IT infrastructure, including hardware, servers, and virtual machines, using a VMware environment such as vSphere. They then configure it for production by creating user accounts, controlling network access, and managing storage and security settings.

The software must be regularly maintained and VMware administrators must monitor client systems daily and detect problem areas. They proactively design and install updates, versions, and application patches. Less frequently, they also update drivers, servers, and firmware with the latest technology.

Provide technical support

To support customers 24 hours a day, VMware administrators can be available at irregular hours. They must respond quickly to customer reported issues, conduct a root cause analysis, and go through various test scenarios for a complete resolution.

Recommend solutions

VMware administrators are heavily involved in planning the customer's infrastructure. This involves gathering data from the system, searching for possible solutions, developing and presenting design ideas, and carefully evaluating the suggestions of others. Additionally, they assess industry trends and help implement standards and best practices.

Create documentation

Those in this role must create and maintain documentation for all system-related processes and procedures they are responsible for, including project requirements, changes and upgrades, implementation plans, and support tickets. Another paper-intensive task is creating summary reports for customers or internal administration.
